How to Save a Life: My brother-in-law, Dr. Wade May, saves lives everyday as a Cardiologist. Early this summer, he was at a pool party where a young boy had a near drowning. His expert CPR technique saved this child’s life. It was a good reminder for me to re-certify on my CPR/BLS training. Thank you Tammy for doing a great job teaching the class to my office staff today. DOCTOR FOR A DAY

Doctor for a Day’: When I was in high school, Dr. David Fakier started a program to shadow a doctor for a day to get some exposure to medicine. I absolutely loved it and it made my decision to go to medical school easy. Over 20 years later I want to continue that tradition. Alexandra Bourgeois an LSU medical student with me today. My goal is to inspire young people to go into medicine and showing them how incredible Dermatology is! Anyone a junior in high school and older may spend a day with me. DR. SARAH’S THOUGHT OF THE DAY

When I meet another 40 year old for the first time, in 3 seconds I know 3 things:
(1) if they smoke
(2) if the really wear GOOD sunscreen
(3) if they use Retin-a cream at night
My first day as a dermatology resident I was 27. I have used Retin-a cream every night since then ( except for my 4 pregnancies) because it really is the most preventative anti-aging cream available. The trick is to find one that you can use every night without getting dry, red or irritated. We can help you with that! Prescription versions are for acne prone patients or very oily skin. If you don’t do these 3 things I will have to work much harder to keep you looking younger (aka more expensive).

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT VITAMIN D

I am Vitamin D deficient and a dermatologist. Not shocking since I have embarrassed my kids for the past 10 years with my big hats, swim shirts, and excessive amounts of sunscreen. I also had a basal cell skin cancer on my face at age 31. Not shocking either if you knew me from ages 15-25. My high school and college friends will tell you I always tried to have the best tan possible. This question arises about vitamin D levels and not enough sun exposure. My advice is to use the non-chemical sunscreens ( titanium and zinc oxide) , wear hats and sun protective clothing and get your vitamin D level checked by bloodwork. I am taking prescription vitamin D once a week for 3 months then rechecking my levels. The sun damage and skin cancer I have seen over the past 10 years has proven to me that those that don’t protect look worse than those that do. A pill is easy to take but reversing the damage already done is much more challenging! I have more energy since taking my supplements and feel better knowing I am protecting my bones and my skin at the same time!

DERMATOLOGY PRESCRIPTIONS

Most of the dermatology prescriptions I write are expensive. It is just the way it is. I write a lot of ‘name brand’ products over ‘generic’ because I want what is BEST for my patients. I have used every cream personally that I have ever written and I will tell you it does matter to have the better ‘vehicle’. The vehicle is what makes it a cream, lotion, ointment, foam or spray and also gives some of the elegant feel, better smell, easier to apply and penetrate better for faster results. I disagree that it’s ‘ just the same’.. It’s like saying that walmart brand macaroni is the same as Velvetta Mac n cheese. Yes they are both macaroni but we all know which is better:) if your plan doesn’t cover name brand I will gladly substitute to make it affordable or be as generous as I can with my samples’ Doesn’t hurt to go for the ‘best’ first to see if covered!
